On this episode, Maggie talks with Michael Freeman from our Crozet store about finding the right Benjamin Moore paint for your project. With so many different surfaces, it can be hard to narrow down what you need for your project and how all of the options differ.

Notes from the Corner

Painting Over a Space

If you’re a current homeowner, you might want to paint over an existing space. You want to evaluate what type of paint was on there before; from there, you can determine the new coat. The most significant consideration Michael pointed out is latex versus oil-based paint, which changes depending on the surface you are painting on.

Initial Considerations

Oil vs. Latex

Latex paints are water-based paints you most commonly use when painting inside on drywall or other surfaces. Although latex is used primarily, there are still instances where you want to use oil-based paints, such as painting a roof or cabinetry and trim, or some like to work with those oil-based paints.

Sheens

There are two types of sheens, depending on whether you are working with interior or exterior paints. Sheens can range from a flat to a gloss, affecting the amount of light reflected on a space. These sheens can also be mixed in the same room – for example, a homeowner might paint a wall with a flat sheen but do a glossier color for the trim that highlights or frames out the wall a little. There are also some go-to sheens for certain products, such as satin for cabinetry, semi-gloss for furniture and trim, and more.

Quality Differences

Typically for your project, Benjamin Moore will have what our paint team calls a good, better, and best product, so there is always something to meet your budget requirements. Michael explained that while cheaper options exist, investing in higher-quality paint will save time. The more expensive options typically stand up more over time with higher durability, and they will get better coverage, especially if you are doing a color change in your space.

Painting Outside Your Home

You can have lots of surfaces on the exterior of your home. The most significant consideration is whether you want to paint or stain your surface. Paint is typically recommended for products like HardiePlank siding, vinyl siding, or aluminum. For wood surfaces, stains soak into the wood and seal it to protect it, whereas paint acts as a shield.

Other Considerations for Choosing the Right Paint

Some solutions work better for your project, depending on your painting area. Scuff-X holds up and resists scuffs and beatings if you paint a high-traffic area such as playrooms or commercial spaces. Ben Moore’s Kitchen & Bath and Aura Bath & Spa hold up more against moisture and humidity for painting bathrooms or other spaces with higher moisture.

Depending on the painter’s sensitivity, paint fumes might also be a concern. Most of Ben Moore’s products have low VOCs, which cut down on fumes, and Eco Spec has zero VOCs.
