Remodels can be complicated, and ensuring you have a plan before you start is critical. We talked with Annita Steppe, a Cardinal Home Center sales associate for seven years, about her experience working with both customers and contractors and the common issues she sees pop up.

Notes from the Corner

Where to Start

Remodels can incorporate a lot of different elements, depending on the scope of your project. Whether you want to remodel a room or part of an entire house, the planning process might look slightly different. Annita says the starting point primarily comes down to personal preference and what you feel comfortable tackling. Also, you should keep in mind the impact the remodel will have on your day-to-day living – for example, with a complex kitchen remodel, it might be more difficult to cook or prepare meals while work is being done.

Tied to the spaces, you also want to determine what your overall budget is, especially if you want to remodel multiple spaces. We find some homeowners try to plan ahead and budget which rooms they want to do first. Also, some rooms that are remodeled can maximize the value of your home, such as kitchens, outdoor living spaces, basements, or finished attics.

Planning Your Remodel

First, decide if this is a do-it-yourself project, or a do-it-for-me project where you need to hire a contractor. Communicate throughout the process to see what areas need to be cleared out, and set clear expectations ahead of time. Determine a work schedule, and ask when you might need to be on-site throughout the project.

Key Purchases to Consider

Looking to add space? We recommend Weyerhaeuser Parallams or LVLs that can ensure your home is structurally safe while allowing for an open-concept floor plan. We also sell products like Festool dustles tool systems, tools, and more. We can also special order products like cabinets, flooring, wallpaper, and more.
